Remembering Mr Lee Kwan Yew (Anshiqa Agrawal)

  • How was Mr Lee as a person?
He was a great person. Even though I did not know him personally, it is hard not to reminisce his demise. His contributions to Singapore were so great that in fact without him, neither I nor anyone else would be here. His character is blatantly portrayed through his encouraging speeches. I presume he had been a strict, determined and persevering man with a heart of gold. His sincere love for a multicultural society gave way to a Singapore where no race is discriminated, a Singapore where no religion is mocked. All this would not have been possible if he did not have a strong, unabated belief in his vision and values.
  •  What are some of his values, beliefs and convictions that guided his actions and had an impact on his decisions?
He strongly believed in a racial city and a clean and green one too. He also had a keen eye for even the littlest details and with his high level of education, could solve many pressing issues. His determination and perseverance shone in every step he took, in every speech he made.
  • What are his key contributions to Singapore?
He planted a tree every year, thus, planting the seed of a green Singapore. He campaigned the cleaning of the Singapore River so, today we have a dirt-free environment. His strict enforcement of the law, along with the implementation of National Service, empowered us with a strong army for defence. The importance he placed on education is the reason why every child in Singapore grows with a sharp mind and active body. He was the man gave us the Singapore we know.
